#23 Water

Water

In class we were handed two paper plates one filled with water and the other oil. We were then given feathers. Professor Clawson told us to put a feather into the oil and see what would happen. The feather grew extremely heavy and it stuck together. This was supposed to symbolized a bird getting caught in an oil spill and what would happen when it was covered in oil.

Next we were told to put a clean feather into the water and see what happened. The feather floated on top of the water and it made it impossible for us to try and make it sink to the bottom. Water droplets would run right off the feather. Next Professor Clawson told us to put the feather that was covered in oil into the plate that had water and to try and see if we could get the oil to come off. We couldn't no matter what we did my group couldn't get the oil off. Professor Clawson came around with a bottle of Dawn dish soap and put just one drop in the water, we started to clean the feather off and the oil started to come off the feather! We learned that during oil spills they will use Dawn dish soap to clean up the animals and get the oil off of them.
