#6 Giant Squid

Giant Squid


Facts:
  • It is a deep-ocean dwelling squid
  • They can grow to tremendous size, some estimates have the maximum size for a female at 43 feet long and 33 feet long for the males
  • Scientists aren't sure exactly how many species of the giant squid there are but research suggests that there is only one
  • In 2004 Japanese researchers took the first images of a live giant squid in its natural habitat

  • They have a large head, eight arms and two tentacles used for grabbing prey
  • Giant squid eat other squids, fish and shrimps, scientists believe that giant squid can attack and eat small whales




Activity: Make your own Giant Squid

Materials needed
  • Paint
  • Paint brushes
  • Two large sheets of paper
  • Pencil
  • Scissors
  • Stapler
  • Packing Tape
  • Trash Bags
  • Bubble Wrap
  • Streamers
  • Styrofoam ball half's
  • Hot Glue
  • Large googly eyes

Step 1:
Take your large pieces of paper and draw out the shape you want your squid to be

Step 2:

Take your paint and brushes out and get ready to paint on the paper
Step 3:
PAINT! Paint your squid until you are satisfied on how it looks to you

Step 4:
Set aside your two squid heads to dry and lay out a trash bag that you have cut to protect the table. Roll out the desired length of bubble wrap you would like and then cut

Step 5: 
Cut your bubble wrap into strips

Step 6:
Time to paint the bubble wrap!


Step 7:
Don't forget to wash out your brushes when you're done
Step 8:
Let your bubble wrap and paper dry overnight


Step 9:
Cut out your squid head make sure that no white is showing on both sides
Step 10:
Staple the sides together around the edges
Step 11:
Cut the bubble wrap strips to have wavy sides (Optional) Then tape them on the inside of the squid head. Place them at different lengths and add as many as desired

Step 12:
Cut streamers into different lengths and tape on the inside of the squid
Step 13:
Stuff two trash bags up inside the squid head this will give it shape, and then tape so they don't come falling out
Step 14:
Take your Styrofoam out of the plastic and find out where you want to place the eyes

Step 15:
Take any type of glue, i used gorilla glue and then hot glue to glue the googly eyes onto the Styrofoam and then glued them onto the squid head


Step 16:
Look into those eyes
Step 17:
All done to enjoy your squid!
